Meeting Recap 02/26/20
 
The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley conducted their February 2020.  The meeting was called to order by President Gene Melchers at 6:30 PM.  Those in attendance included Charlene Melchers, Chuck Church, Sharon Freeman, Don Ryan, Vickie Ryan, Sam Garcia, Janice Garcia, Tina Borzage, guest Rory Larsen, guest speaker Kevin Von Tungeln and Gene Melchers.  Everyone enjoyed dinner.  The formal meeting began at 7:00 PM after the Flag Salute, Invocation and 4-Way Test.  
 
President Gene Melchers asked Don Ryan to introduce our guest speaker for the evening.  Don introduced Kevin Von Tungeln from Thompson and Von Tungeln Trust and Estate Lawyers.  Mr. Von Tungeln spoke to the Club Members on the topic of Estate Planning.  He emphasized the importance of having a comprehensive plan including a Trust to avoid probate, take care of incapacity, avoid early inheritance to young children, cover long term care in a Nursing Facility, avoid estate taxes and cover disabled beneficiaries.  Kevin then answered questions from the Club Members.  President Gene Melchers and the club thanked Mr. Von Tungeln for speaking to the Club.
 
President Melchers asked the Members for updates to their projects:
  • Don Ryan reported that the first Bubble event will take place at the Yellen School on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 10:00 AM.
     
  • Charlene Melchers indicated that she had been in contact with the school superintendent for use of the same school as last year for the Sheriff’s Appreciation Dinner.  Pastor Dave Brown has moved to Tehachapi and requested that his membership be transferred.
     
  • Sharon Freeman reported on RYLA activity.  Student Orientation is scheduled for March 11 at Lancaster High School at 6:00 PM.  Two students have been selected from Lancaster High School Interact Club to attend for our Club.
     
  • Chuck Church and Don Ryan reported on the status of Boy Scout and Girl Scout selections for our proposed DDG Grant.  Chuck has two troops selected.  Don is still working on two troops.  Chuck also read a Thank You letter from Mental Health America Los Angeles (Judy Cooperberg) thanking the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley for their Grant.
     
  • Don and Vickie Ryan reported that the Sunday/Funday for Yellen School has been moved to a Saturday and will be on May 16, 2020.  The name of the event has been changed as well to Hay Day in May.  Don and Vickie passed out flyers for the event for the Club Members to distribute.
 
There was no additional business to discuss.
 
President Gene Melchers adjourned the meeting at 7:52 PM.
