ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY SUPPORTS CHALLENGER MIDDLE SCHOOL CALENDAR PROJECT

Students, Faculty, Parent Teacher Organization Members, and Rotary Club of Antelope Valley Members attended the Calendar Presentation Ceremony at Challenger Middle School in Lancaster on Friday, April 12, 2024.  The Event was the culmination of a fun project created by Art Teacher Mark Murray for the Students at Challenger Middle School.  The project consisted of the students drawing colorful pictures to be selected and included in the production of a 2025 Calendar.  The contest was very successful and thirteen students were selected as winners of the Art Class project (One picture for each month and one picture for the cover).

 

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley worked with the school to set up the project and fund the production of the 2025 Calendars with Grant funding and Club funding to complete the project.  Mark Murray forwarded the winning selections to the Rotary Club and the artwork was forwarded to the printer for production.  At the recognition ceremony The Rotary Club presented each winner with a Calendar and an Art Set consisting of a Learn to Draw Manual and a Color Pencil and Charcoal Sketch Kit.  The balance of the initial 100 Calendars was presented to Challenger Middle School and the Parent Teacher Organization to sell and raise funds for future projects.  It was a fun project for all those involved and proceeds from the Calendar sales will inspire future projects.

 

 

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS SOUTHEAST KERN COUNTY FIRST RESPONDERS BANQUET

Over 85 people including First Responders, Rotarians, friends, and family attended the Southeast Kern County First Responders Banquet on February 24, 2024.  The Event was held in the Rosamond Elementary School Auditorium.  Former Club President Sam Garcia was our Emcee for the evening.  State Assemblyman Tom Lackey from the 34 Assembly District was our Keynote Speaker. 

 

A delicious dinner was catered by Patty's Cafe including roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a dinner roll, and a tossed green salad.  Antelope Valley Rotary provided a delicious chocolate cake for dessert.  Entertainment was provided by Zack Montagner on classical violin.  Zach was a former Rotary Club of Antelope Valley Dan Stover Music Contest Winner in 2022. 

 

Assemblyman Tom Lackey addressed the audience and spoke of re-uniting our community and thanked our First Responders for their service and devotion.  Sam Garcia and Assemblyman Lackey then presented Certificates of Recognition and Recognition Plaques to The California Highway Patrol, Station #830, The Desert Search and Rescue Team, The First Valley Medical Group, Hall Ambulance, Kern County Fire Station, #15, and The Kern County Sheriff's Department, Mojave Substation.  Hudson Horner was presented a scholarship check from a Rotary Club Member.  Karl’s Hardware and Firearms of Rosamond, Mojave, and Tehachapi, a long-time sponsor for this event, donated a firearm to be raffled off to one of the First Responders.  Desert Search and Rescue won the special raffle.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS 29th CHILDREN'S SHOPPING SPREE

For the 29^th year, The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley conducted its’ Annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 9, 2023.  This year The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley increased the number of needy families from 32 to 34.  Once again, the Walmart Team provided the venue for these under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from several local elementary schools within the Antelope Valley.  The Club was assisted by students from the Lancaster Interact Club, Volunteer Teachers, and Rotary Club Members.  

 

Check-in began at 8:00 AM.  The children were grouped with staggered check-in times to be provided with name tags and Volunteer Assistants to help with their shopping.  Shopping began shortly after 8:00 AM.  The children shopped the entire store selecting gifts for Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters, pets and other relatives.  At the completion of shopping, the Rotary Club Members, Adult Volunteers, and Lancaster Interact Members took the gifts through the check-out stand and on to the wrapping tables.  Each gift was brightly wrapped with festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange with the children’s family members at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given a gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice. 

 

A tremendous Thank You goes out to Walmart Manager Mr. Nhan Nguyen and Floor Supervisor Sunshine Ferguson and her staff for their support this year.  Walmart’s help and assistance made this event possible.  As always, the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley strived to established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again this year with joyous and great success.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS 13th OKTOBERFEST

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted its 13^th Annual Oktoberfest and 9^th consecutive event at beautiful Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale on October 8, 2023.  Once again Frances Lane and Ken provided the venue for this fabulous event.  Over 100 Rotarians, family, friends, and guests attended the event and enjoyed the food, drink, music, fun, and raffles.  

 

Anton Schnitzel and the Merry Makers as always provided the entertainment.  All the traditional polka songs and Oktoberfest music was enjoyed as well as requests from the audience.  Food included Brats, German meat balls, German potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, and of course German Chocolate Cake for dessert.  German Beer was available as well as wine, soft drinks, water and coffee.

 

Five Lancaster High School Interact Club Members provided additional help by selling raffle tickets, serving on the food line, and distributing raffle baskets to the winning ticket holders.  The weather was perfect for the event.  Although it was warm, all the tables were in the shade for a majority of the afternoon. The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley held their 2022-2023 Demotion Party on July 26, 2023 at Denny’s Restaurant.  Activities included dinner for the evening, a review of the year’s events, Outgoing President Chuck Church addressing the Club Members, the presentation of awards, swearing in of New Club Members, swearing in of New Executive Officers, the presentation of gifts to the Club Members, and finally enjoying the year-end cake.  It was enjoyable evening and close-out to 2022-2023 and the kick-off to Sharon Freeman’s year as President in 2023-2024.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS 2ND FIESTA DAY

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted their 2^nd Fiesta Day on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale.  Over 75 friends, relatives, and guests attended the fund raiser event.  Frances Lane our lovely hostess again provided her home for this event.  Proceeds from the event go to the Club’s annual contribution to support Breast Cancer Screening with our Lindavista Sister Rotary Club in Mexico City.

 

Food included tacos stuffed with beef, chicken, pork, or elk meat along with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, salsa, and chilis.  Refired beans and rice were also included with dessert and coffee.  Drinks included delicious margaritas, beer, wine, and water.  After lunch there was cornhole to play and tables with raffle baskets to win, a silent auction, a live auction, and a bonus raffle prize of a week’s stay at beautiful Lake Tahoe.

 

Certificates of recognition were presented to the Club by Jackie Owens for Congressman Mike Garcia, by Chuck Bostwick for Supervisor Kathryn Barger, and a Certificate of Recognition from U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.  Lots of fun, food, and fellowship was had by all who attended.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY AND LANCASTER SUNRISE ROTARY HOST 2ND  DON STOVER MUSIC CONTEST

On April 12, 2023 the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted its’ second Dan Stover Music Contest with the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club.  The Dan Stover Music Contest was established by the Rotary Club of Alhambra, in the year following the death of Dan Stover.  In Honor of Don and Kay, a Music Scholarship Program created in his name. The program was proposed, organized, and championed by a new Rotarian, Christine Montan.  The Antelope Valley Contest included two contestants this year.  Carter Boeker performed on Classical Violin and Jaden Mueller performed on Tenor Sax.  At the conclusion of the performances the Judges made their selections.

 

Carter Boeker was the winner with Jaden Mueller coming in second.  Carter will represent the Antelope Valley at the District 5300 Rotary Conference on May 6, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Carter will perform at the Conference during lunch on Saturday, May 6, 2023.  If Carter wins the competition at District Conference, he will have the opportunity to move on to the next level for additional scholarship funds.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY RINGS IN THE NEW YEAR

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley closed out 2022 and rolled in 2023 at their Year End Holiday Party at Gino’s Restaurant in Palmdale.  Great Italian food was available and drinks were plentiful.  As always, the evening was highlighted by our annual gift exchange. Everyone who brought a gift drew a number to select a package from the gift table.  After the first gift was selected, the next person could either select from the gift table or take the gift that was previously selected.  Selected gifts were limited to two take-aways before being locked down.  Warm, cuddly blankets were the main take-away items for the evening.  Everyone enjoyed the food, drinks, gifts, and fellowship.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY SUPPORTS AV VETS4VETERANS

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley assisted the AV Vets4Veterans Club at their monthly food distribution event on Saturday, November 19, 2022.  The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley selected Vets4Veterans as the recipient for their District 5300 Grant funding for 2022-2023.  AV Vets4Veterans supports Veterans with several programs such as: Restart Healing, Restart Housing, Restart Scholarships, Restart Immediate Need, Veterans Training, Surviving Spouse Program and Monthly Food Distribution.

 

On Saturday, The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley presented a check to the AV Vets4Veterans to purchase food and helped sort the food into individual cartons for distribution to needy Veteran Families.  It was a fun project and AV Rotary was pleased to be able to support such a needy project.

CRAIG NYSTROM BRIEFS AV ROTARY ON PROJECT SANTA

Craig Nystrom was the guest speaker at the October 5, 2022 weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley.  Craig spoke to the Club about a project that he started in 2021.  Project Santa provides for a visit from Santa and a small gift for students with significant medical issues and disabilities who are unable to travel to see Santa at local appearances during the Holiday Season.

Last year Craig and his team were able to visit multiple Palmdale School District campuses and Special Education classrooms to spread Christmas cheer.  Along the way teachers and administrators spent their own money on gifts for the students for Santa to give out.  This project supports families by promoting parental engagement by really showing families that Palmdale School District cares for them and the students, and is working hard to make school fun and interesting for all students.  When the families can see that others are helping them support their children, it goes a long way to keeping families and parents engaged in the school district. 

 

This year Craig is asking if the Club can help support the project for the upcoming Holiday Season.  The Club was more than happy to help support the project for 2022.  A check was presented to Mr. Nystrom to initiate the project as soon as possible.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS FIRST RESPONDERS LUNCHEON

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted any and all First Responders in the Rosamond area for a free luncheon following the Rosamond First Responders Appreciation Day Parade and September Fest on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Glendower Park.  Following the Parade that was sponsored by the Rosamond Chamber of Commerce, the public met at Glendower Park for the September Fest.  There were games for the kids including two Moon Bounce rides, cornhole games and a talent show.

 

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted the First Responders Luncheon in the Park Clubhouse for all Sheriff’s Deputies, Firemen, CHP Officers, Ambulance Drivers and Attendants, Nurses and AMR Drivers and Attendants.  The Luncheon consisted of roast chicken, baked beans, whole kernel corn, potato salad and rolls. Lemonade, iced tea and water were provided to drink and cookies were provided for dessert.  The Rotary Club also sold hot dogs, chips and soda for everyone who was not a First Responder.  The Club held a raffle for three bicycles and several other raffle basket prizes.  It was a great morning and afternoon of fun especially for the First Responders and kids.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS DISTRICT GOVERNOR ROGER GUTIERREZ

On August 3, 2022 District Governor Roger Gutierrez visited the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley for dinner and a Board of Directors Meeting.  The evening was divided into two sessions.  Session 1 included introductions around the table with everyone stating their name, years with the club and current position in the Club.  Non-Members introduced themselves and their association with the Club Member who invited them to the meeting.  Introductions concluded with President Chuck Church introducing our new District 5300 Governor, Roger Gutierrez.  The Club presented District Governor Gutierrez with a Club Notebook containing photos of the 2021-2022 Year in Review, the Club Budget for 2022-2023 and a list of the scheduled events planned for 2022-2023.

 

Roger thanked the Club for inviting him for the evening and for the Club Notebook.  He then spoke to the Club Members and guests and concluded with the presentation of a Certificate to Tina Borzage as our Club Champion in 2021-2022.  Chuck Church accepted the Certificate and pin for Tina who was visiting Family in Mexico.  Roger then presented Paul Harris Fellow awards to Club Members.

Session 2 was a typical Board of Directors Meeting which included the Pledge of Allegiance, the Invocation, the usual Club Items on the Agenda (Review and approval of the Minutes of the previous meeting, presentation and approval of the monthly Treasurer’s Report, current status of scheduled events through December of 2022 (The Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree in December, the up-coming First Responders Recognition and Appreciation Event in Rosamond in September, the Oktoberfest in October and the current status of Grants).  At the completion of business, the Four Way Test was recited.  Roger was presented with a bottle of wine and two wine glasses as a gift from the Club.  The Board Meeting was then adjourned.

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted their first Fiesta Day at Hacienda Lane Ranch on June 11, 2022.  Over 90 friends, family and guests attended the event.  The Fiesta Day was a fund raiser event in support of a joint project between the AV Rotary Club and the Linda Vista Rotary Club of Mexico City in support of Breast Cancer Screening for those without medical insurance or those unable to afford screening. 

Setup began early Saturday morning.  First came the guest’s tables, then the food serving tables, then the raffle prize tables, the bar, the photo booth and the ticket tables.  Guests began arriving at 2:00 PM and were able to select their tables, buy raffle prize tickets and visit the bar. Our DJ kept the music playing all afternoon.  Guests enjoyed rice, beans, three types of tacos (chicken, pork and carne asada).  Cheese quesadillas were also available when guests came back for second helpings.  Multiple seasonings were available to spice up the luncheon to your own taste.  Frozen margaritas, beer, wine, soft drinks and water were available to drink.

A Corn Hole Tournament was held after lunch with half the entry money going to the winner and half the entry money going to our trust fund to support our joint project with Linda Vista Rotary.  Photos were available at the photo booth and the afternoon was closed out with the awarding of the raffle prizes and live auction prize winners.  A great time was had by all and the Club is looking forward to next year’s event.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS DON STOVER MUSIC CONTEST

On April 6, 2022 the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted the first Dan Stover Music Contest held in the Antelope Valley.  Dan Stover Music Contest was established by the Rotary Club of Alhambra, in the year following the death of Dan Stover.  In Honor of Don and Kay, a Music Scholarship Program created in his name. The program was proposed, organized, and championed by a new Rotarian, Christine Montan.  The Antelope Valley Contest included three contestants.  David Skyy-Alvardo performed on keyboard, Matthew Stutelberg performed on Tenor Sax and Zachary Montagner performed on Classical Violin.  At the conclusion of the performances the Judges made their selections.

Zachary Montagner was the winner with Matthew Stutelberg coming in second and David Skyy-Alvardo placing third.  Zachary will represent the Antelope Valley at the District 5300 Rotary Conference on May 24, 2022 at Indian Wells, California.  Zachary will perform at the Conference during lunch on Saturday.  If Zachary wins the competition at District Conference, he will have the opportunity to move on to the next level for additional scholarship funds.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY  HOSTS 27^TH CHILDREN’S SHOPPING SPREE
 

For the 27^th year, The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley conducted it's Annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 11, 2021.  This year The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley increased the number of needy families from 25 to 30.  Once again, the Walmart Team provided the venue for these under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from several local elementary schools within the area.  The Club was assisted by students from the Lancaster Interact Club, Volunteers and Salvation Army Members. 

 

Check-in began at 7:30 AM.  The children were provided with a Volunteer Assistant and shopping began at 8:00 AM.  The children shopped the entire store selecting gifts for Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters, pets and other relatives.  At the completion of shopping, the Rotary Club Members and Adult Volunteers took the gifts through the check-out stand and on to the wrapping tables.  Each gift was brightly wrapped with festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange with the children’s family members at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given a gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice. 

 

A tremendous Thank You goes out to Walmart Manager Travis Johnson and his support staff again this year for their help and cooperation in making this event possible.  As always, the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley strives to established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again this year with joyous and great success.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS 11th ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST

 

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted its 11^th Annual Oktoberfest at Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale on October 2, 2021.  Close to 100 Rotarians, friends and guests attended the event and enjoyed the food, drink, music, fun, and raffles.  Frances Lane once again graciously hosted the Oktoberfest at her beautiful ranch style home. 

 

As always, entertainment was provided by Anton Schnitzel and the Merry Makers.  All the traditional polka songs and Oktoberfest music was enjoyed as well as requests from the audience.  Food included roast pork loin, German potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, bratwurst and of course German Chocolate Cake for dessert.  Several German Beers were available as well as wine, soft drinks, water and coffee.

 

Lancaster High School Interact Club Members provided additional help by serving lunch, selling raffle tickets and distributing raffle baskets to the winning ticket holders.  It was a great afternoon of food, drink and fun.  The pictures tell the real story of the afternoon's food, drink and fun.  A great time was had by all that attended.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS BEE KEEPER STEVE MELTON AT THEIR WEEKLY MEETING

IT IS YOUR BEES WAX

 

Bee Keeper Steve Melton was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley at their weekly meeting.  Mr. Melton briefed the Club on the art of Bee Keeping.  Steve brought his bee keeping outfit and tools that he uses to tend his beehives.  Steve showed the Club Members his working outfit.  He was wearing a clean outfit but also showed the Members a soiled uniform after a day's work on the hives.  Steve covered the types of bees within the hive including the queen, the queen's maidens, drones and worker bees.  Steve displayed the types of containers he used and the tools he uses including a tray removal tool and a hand held smoker.  The tray removal tool is used to remove trays from the hive containers.  The smoker is used to calm the bees if they should get overly aggressive and appear ready to swarm.  It was a very informative meeting and the Club Members enjoyed and thanked Mr. Melton for his presentation.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS SUE STORM AND BARBARA FRAZIER AT THEIR WEEKLY MEETING

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted Sue Storm and Barbara Frazier at their weekly meeting at Sizzler's on August 25, 2021.  Sue and Barbara spoke to the Club Members about the 2022 18th Annual Holocaust Art Contest.  Sue us the Chairperson for the 2022 event and Barbara is her assistant.  The event is held annually to keep everyone aware of horrors of the Holocaust and support our Youth in the creation of Art.  The Art includes music, singing, sculpture, painting and sketching.  The contestants will be competing at the local, regional and district levels.

 

Later in the meeting the Club Members welcomed long time Member Tina Borzage home from a lengthy with her family members in Mexico.  Tina has been working with a Club in Mexico City to set up a joint International Team Project.  The Mexico City club is anxious to join with the Antelope Valley Rotary Club in a joint project.

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley held their Annual Demotion Party on June 30, 2021 at the home of Member Sharon Freeman.  The Party honored outgoing President Sam Garcia for his year as President and many other years of service.  In addition, Don Ryan was welcomed in as President for the 2021-2022 Rotary Year.  The Party was attended by Sam and Janice Garcia, Don and Vickie Ryan and their granddaughter Rory, Gene and Charlene Melchers, Yolanda Risch, David and Gracie Maddock, Sharon Freeman and Chuck Church.  Hostess Sharon Freeman provided a delicious Spanish meal topped off with pie and ice cream for dessert.  The Club also displayed it's new banner for the first time at a major Club Event.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY HOSTS 26th CHILDREN'S SHOPPING SPREE

For the 26^th year, The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley conducted its’ Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 5 and 12, 2020.  The Walmart Team provided the venue for twenty-five under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  Due to COVID restrictions this year the event was held on two Saturdays.  The children came from several local elementary schools.  The students were selected by teachers from the local school districts and other youth leaders.  This year the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley had each child generate their shopping list for their family (items, sizes, colors, etc.) and on December 5, 2020 the Rotary Club Members and Volunteers did the shopping for the children.  At the completion of shopping, the Rotary Club Members and Adult Volunteers took the gifts home to be brightly wrapped with festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange with the children’s family members at Christmas. 

 

The following Saturday, December 12, 2020, the families came to the Walmart Super Center to pick up their gifts outside the Gardening Section of the store.  In addition, each child was given a gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice.  The two-step approach used this year allowed for the parents and children to remain at home on the first Saturday rather than have to shop with a large holiday crowd and pick up their gifts the following Saturday in a safe and orderly manner.  This reduced the risk of being subjected to any COVID exposure.  A big Thank You goes out to Walmart again this year for their help and cooperation in making this event possible.  As always, the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley strived to established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again with joyous success.

DONATION TO MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA

 

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley is proud to donate to the Antelope Valley Chapter of Mental Health America.  Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) was founded in 1924 and is a private, non-profit charitable organization with a mission to ensure that all people with mental illness assume their full and rightful place in the community.  Its message is simple: mental health matters to the health and well-being of everyone.
 

Serving the Antelope Valley community since 1988, MHALA’s Antelope Valley Enrichment Services offers a broad spectrum of services for adults and young adults with mental illness, including those who are homeless.  It also serves veterans and returning military personnel and their families with or without mental issues.  MHALA helps individuals develop skills, gain self-confidence and receive the support they need to move from isolated, hopeless lives to lives with purpose, dignity and self-reliance.

Programs include Homeless Assistance and Homeless Outreach Prevention and Engagement (HOPE).  The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley is glad to be able to support MHALA in their ongoing efforts.

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley conducted its’ 25th Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 7, 2019.  McDonalds and the Walmart Team provided the venue for twenty-five under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from several local elementary schools.  The students were selected by teachers from the local school districts and other youth leaders.  Each child was treated to an early morning breakfast at McDonalds inside the store and then escorted by an Antelope Valley Rotary Club Member or a volunteer Interact student to shop throughout the store for gifts for their family members.  At the completion of shopping, Rotary Club Members, Adult Volunteers and Interact Club Members wrapped the packages with bright and festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange with family members at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given a gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice.  A big Thank You goes out to McDonalds and Walmart for their help and cooperation in making this event possible.  As always, the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley strived to established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again with joyous success.

ANTELOPE VALLEY ROTARIAN PARTICIPATES IN SUPER BUILD

Antelope Valley Rotarian Tina Borzage recently participated in her fourth Super Build on December 14, 2019.  Tina supported the Super Build this year in Tijuana, Mexico.  The Super Build provides housing to needy families all over the world but twice a year, they build homes on the East side of Tijuana.  In order for the families to qualify for a home, they have to do community service and help build other homes for other families and when they have contributed a certain numbers of community hours, they go on a waiting list until they get chosen to receive a home. 
 

Rotarians from several clubs in District 5300 participate in the Super Build.  About 40 people total started work about 9:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2019.  The workforce was divided in two groups.  While some worked on framing the sides of the homes and the roofs, others painted all the wall panels.  By 12 noon, the walls were up and the roofs were in place.  Work stopped for lunch at 12. 

 

After lunch the workforce continued working on all the detailing and painting the outside of the houses and all the trimming.  The roofers installed shingles on the homes and completed installation of the windows and front door.  By 3:30 PM, the two homes were finished. The families received the keys to their new home and many house gifts from the Rotarian workforce.

On a sunny October afternoon, the Rotary Club of Antelope Valley hosted its 10^th Annual Oktoberfest at Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale.  The newly formed Antelope Valley Rotary consists of the former Palmdale Rotary Club, the AV Sunrise Rotary Club and the Rosamond Rotary Club.  Over 90 Rotarians, friends and guests attended the event and enjoyed the food, drink, music, fun, and raffles.  Frances Lane once again graciously hosted the Oktoberfest at her beautiful ranch style home.

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley conducted their monthly Board meeting at Gino’s Italian Restaurant in Palmdale on 14 August 2019.  In addition to the Board Meeting, the Club had the pleasure of hosting the District 5300 Governor for 2019-2020 Luanne Arredondo.  The meeting was called to order by President Gene Melchers at 6:30 PM.  Members in attendance were Charlene Melchers, Janice Garcia, Sam Garcia, Chuck Church, Don Ryan, Vickie Ryan, Yolanda Risch, Tina Borzage, Sharon Freeman, Rory Larsen and guest of honor District Governor Luanne Arredondo. Full details of the meeting will be presented at next month’s Board meeting when the minutes are read and approved.  Everyone enjoyed dinner.  The formal meeting began at 7:00 PM.  President Gene Melchers introduced District Governor Luanne Arredondo to the attendees.  Luanne will address the audience after completion of monthly business.   

 

Secretary Janice Garcia read the minutes from the July Board meeting.  The Minutes were approved.

 

Tina Borzage addressed the group regarding the Treasurer’s Report for the month ending July 31, 2019.  Since the new joint account has not yet been opened, the report for July was deferred until next month’s Board Meeting.    

 

President Gene Melchers will visit the bank this week and pick up the signature cards for the new account.   

 

Projects completed in 2018-2019 were discussed.  Sam Garcia presented the Palmdale projects which included: The Children’s Shopping Spree at Walmart, donations to the Antelope Elementary School Music Program, RYLA, Rotoplast, The Rotary Foundation, Superbuild, support for our Interact Club at Pete Knight High School and Oktoberfest.  Don Ryan presented the projects for AV Sunrise which included: The Sunday Funday fundraiser to support Yellen School, swap meet sales at Four Points and supporting the monthly volunteer cleanup at Joe Davies Air Park.  Gene Melchers presented the projects for Rosamond which included: The Sheriff’s Appreciation Dinner, Monday Night Football fundraiser, AV Senior Fair BBQ support, Septemberfest, donations to Rotoplast, The Rotary Foundation, scholarships and support to Interact. 

 

President Gene Melchers again introduced Luanne Arredondo to the audience as out District Governor for District 5300.  Luanne (Mama Lu) addressed the audience and presented her three areas of focus for the year.  They included Foundation, Membership and Branding.  One item she keyed on was a new project called Polio Eradication Program Promise for All (PEPPA).  For this project Luanne created Pinata to pass out to each Rotary Club as she made her District visits.  She asked each club member to contribute a small amount to the Pinata.  The Pinata was passed around and everyone contributed.  Funds collected will be used to fight Polio.  Luanne also mentioned that our Antelope Valley Club had been recognized six times over the years in articles in the Rotarian.  Articles appeared in 1958, 1961, 1973, 1980, 1990 and 2001.  Don Ryan added that he believed there were two other articles in the Rotarian featuring a visit to the area by a Brazilian Soccer Team and local area support for a Clean Water Project in Thailand.  Luanne concluded that she did not have a specific District Governor’s project this year.  She wants all clubs to focus on local projects that can make a difference in their community. 

 

Announcements included: The AV Fair Senior BBQ on August 19^th at the Fair Grounds, Septemberfest on September 21^st at Glendower Park in Rosamond and the Oktoberfest at Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale on October 19^th.  There was no additional business to discuss.

ROTARY CLUB OF ANTELOPE VALLEY GOES LIVE!

The Rotary Club of Antelope Valley held their first official event on July 31, 2019 at Gino’s Italian restaurant in Palmdale.  The meeting was a celebration of the merger of Antelope Valley Sunrise, Palmdale and Rosamond Clubs into the new Rotary Club of Antelope Valley as well as the Demotion Party for the 2018-2019 Clubs.  Gene Melchers hosted the evening as the Club’s new president for 2019-2020.  Several Rotarian dignitaries were in attendance to help celebrate the merger.  Past District Governors (PDG) Raghada Khoury and Randy Pote were in attendance as well as District Governor elect (DGE) Greg Jones and District Governor Nominee (DGN) Betsy Barry. 

 

Raghada Khoury installed the new 2019-2020 Officers and Randy Pote, Greg Jones and Betsy Barry did the ceremonial pinning.  The event was supported by President Robert Munden and members of the Lancaster West Rotary Club, President Barbara Sellon and members of the Lancaster Rotary Club and President Edward Abad and members of the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club.  Congratulations to all out-going and in-coming Officers.

ANTELOPE VALLEY ROTARY (PALMDALE) HOSTS DISTRICT GOVERNOR

The Rotary Club of Palmdale conducted their weekly meeting at Gino’s Italian Restaurant in Palmdale on 6 February 2019.  In place of the monthly Board Meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, the Club was proud to host our District 5300 Governor (John Chase) and his wife Elizabeth for their annual club visit.  The meeting was called to order by President Sam Garcia at 6:35 PM.  Members in attendance were Chuck Church, Janice Garcia, Sharon Freeman, Tina Borzage, Vickie Ryan, Don Ryan, Bernie Longjohn, Anne Longjohn, Charlene Melchers, Gene Melchers, Brandie Partello, special guests John and Elizabeth Chase and Sam Garcia.  Everyone enjoyed dinner.  The formal meeting began at 6:50 PM.   

 

President Sam Garcia welcomed our guests John and Elizabeth Chase to the evening’s meeting.  District Governor John Chase addressed the Club and discussed three main items of importance both for himself and for Rotary.  Governor Chase discussed the importance of membership to the future of Rotary and was excited to learn of the impending merger of three clubs in the Antelope Valley into one new club.  Next, John touched on the ongoing effort to eradicate Polio.  The disease is now present in only two countries Pakistan and Afghanistan.  Rotary has made it a primary focus to eliminate this disease through the Polio Plus campaign.  Finally, John touched on the Rotary Foundation (TRF).  The Foundation is the backbone of Rotary’s effort to make the world a better place to live.  The Foundation supports International (Global) Grants between clubs from two or more countries on major projects and District Grants for local clubs on projects within their areas.

 

After addressing the Club, John took questions from the floor and answered them to everyone’s satisfaction.  In conclusion, John presented two members with Certificates of Achievement for Rotary People of Action.  The recipients were Gene Melchers and Chuck Church.  The Club Members presented John and Elizabeth with parting gifts.

 

The next meeting of the Club will be on 13 February at Sizzler’s Restaurant in Palmdale.  The Minutes and Treasurer’s Report for January will be reviewed at the March Board Meeting along with the Treasurer’s Report for February.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS 24TH CHILDREN’S SHOPPING SPREE

The Rotary Club of Palmdale conducted its’ 24th Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 1, 2018.  The Walmart Team and McDonalds provided the venue for twenty-three under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from several local elementary schools.  The students were selected by teachers from the local school districts and other youth leaders.  Each child was treated to an early morning breakfast at McDonalds inside the store and then escorted by a Palmdale Rotary Club Member or a volunteer teacher to shop throughout the store for gifts for their family members.  At the completion of shopping, the packages were all wrapped with bright and festive holiday wrapping paper and bows by the Palmdale Rotary Club Members, Volunteer Teachers and Palmdale Rotary Interact Club Members from Pete Knight High School for exchange with family members at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given a gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice.  A big Thank You goes out to McDonalds and Walmart for their help and cooperation in making this event possible.  As always, the Rotary Club of Palmdale established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again with joyous success.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS 9TH ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST

On a beautiful September afternoon, the Rotary Club of Palmdale hosted its 9^th Annual Oktoberfest at Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale.  Over 100 Rotarians, friends and guests attended the event and enjoyed the food, drink, music, fun, and raffles.  Frances Lane once again graciously hosted the Oktoberfest at her beautiful ranch style home. 

 

Lancaster Rotary supported the event along with Rotarians from Rosamond and Santa Clarita.  Our District 5300 Governor, John Chase and his family, attended the event and as was amazed at the beautiful setting and weather.  Governor Chase spoke to the crowd and explained the importance of Rotary today both in the community and around the world.  Entertainment was provided as usual by Anton Schnitzel and the Merry Makers.  All the traditional polka songs and Oktoberfest music was enjoyed as well as a stirring rendition of the Chicken Dance. 

 

Food included roast chicken, potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, brats and of course German Chocolate Cake for dessert. Several German Beers were available as well as wine, soft drinks, water and coffee.

 

Barbara Frazier’s Lancaster High School Interact Club provided additional help by serving lunch, selling raffle tickets and distributing raffle baskets to the winning ticket holders.  It was a fantastic afternoon of food, drink and fun.  The pictures tell the whole story.

PALMDALE ROTARIAN PARTICIPATES IN 3RD CONSECUTIVE SUPERBUILD

Palmdale Rotarian Tina Borzage recently participated in her third consecutive Rotary Superbuild on June 2, 2018.  In 2016 and 2017 Tina supported the Superbuild in Corazon.  This year, Rotary District 5300 partnered with "Project Mercy", a company that provides housing to needy families all over the world but about twice a year, they build in the East side of Tijuana.  In order for the families to qualify for a home, they have to do community service and help build other homes for other families and when they have contributed a certain numbers of community hours, they go on a waiting list until they get chosen to receive a home. 

 

In 2018 District 5300 was able to sponsor two homes, one for a family of 8, mom, dad and 6 children and the other, a family of 4, mom, dad and two children.  The cost per home was $6,000.00. 

 

Rotarians from clubs in Las Vegas, Apple Valley, Monrovia, Palmdale, Apple Valley Interact students, an exchange student from Czechoslovakia, and Tijuana Rotary clubs participated in the Superbuild.  About 40 people total started work about 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 2^nd.  The workforce was divided in two groups.  While some worked on framing the sides of the homes and the roofs, others painted all the wall panels.  By 12 noon, the walls were up and the roofs were in place.  We stopped for lunch at 12. 

 

After lunch the workforce continued working on all the detailing and painting the outside of the houses and all the trimming.  The roofers installed shingles on the homes and completed installation of the windows and front door.  By 3:30 PM, the two homes were finished. The families received the keys to their new home and many house gifts from the Rotarian workforce. 

 

This project was coordinated by Raghada Khoury, our current District Governor who made all the arrangements with our partners at Project Mercy.  John Chase, our incoming District Governor, his wife and teenage daughter also participated in the Superbuild.  John and Raghada appreciated the supplies donated by Granite Construction to help in the assembly of the homes.  Group pictures were taken of the completed projects as the families prepared to move into their new homes.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR VISITS PALMDALE ROTARY

District Governor Visits Palmdale Rotary

 

On December 13, 2017 the Rotary Club of Palmdale hosted Raghada Khoury (District 5300 Governor) at their weekly meeting and Christmas Party.  Governor Khoury was accompanied by Assistant Governor Charlene Melchers.  Following introductions, each Officer and Chairman briefed Raghada on the status of their tasks and assignments for the year.  At the conclusion of the Club Members briefings, Governor Raghad Khoury brought the Rotary Club of Palmdale up to date on her year as Governor.  Raghada expressed the importance of the Rotary Foundation and continued need to support Polio Plus.  In addition, she briefed the Club on changes that are taking place throughout District 5300.  Following Raghada’s comments, President Sam Garcia presented the Governor with a check for $500, which was committed at the District Assembly in April, toward the Governor’s project.  Dinner followed the discussions and the Christmas gift exchange completed the evening.

PALMDALE ROTARY RECOGNIZES NEW INTERACT CLUB

Palmdale Rotary Welcomes the Rotary Interact Club of Pete Knight High School

 

The Rotary Club of Palmdale welcomed six students as official Rotary Interact Club Members from Pete Knight High School on Wednesday, October 18, 2017.  Rather than the usual Wednesday Business Meeting, Palmdale Rotary planned a bit of a surprise and hosted the students at Janice and Sam Garcia’s home with a pizza feed and dessert along with the presentation of the Interact Club’s Certification.  Club Members included: Ivy Ta, Louise Candeloza, Argelee Mamangun, Monica Ayala, Paola Sanchez, Elias Sanchez, and their teacher Liaison Joy McCall. 

 

After feasting on pizza, President Sam Garcia presented the official Certification document to Interact Club President Louise Candeloza.  In addition, each member present received an Interact Club pin.  After the presentation, Sam cut the congratulatory cake and served it to the new Interact Club Members.  It was a fun time for all who attended and a great addition to the Rotary Club of Palmdale.

“The Bubble Girl” Makes a Return Engagement

 

The Rotary Club of Palmdale sponsored the second of two assemblies for Special Needs Children in the Antelope Valley on October 9, 2017.  The assembly was held for the children of Manzanita Pre-School.  Sharon Freeman, Janice Garcia and Valerie Lensing attended the event.  Both a morning and afternoon session were held to entertain the children.  Principal Colleen Sawyer from the Palmdale Discovery Center was also in attendance.  The Bubble Girl drew Oh’s and Awe’s from the kids as she started her routine.  She then brought the children into the show with an interactive performance.  The children loved the show and were especially thankful that they were able to participate in the activities.

On a beautiful late summer afternoon, the Rotary Club of Palmdale hosted its 8^th Annual Oktoberfest at Hacienda Lane Ranch in Palmdale.  Over 130 guests attended the event and enjoyed the food, drink, music, fun, and raffles.  Frances Lane once again hosted the Oktoberfest at her beautiful ranch style home.

High School Students Visit Palmdale Rotary Club Meeting to Form Interact Club

 

On August 30^th, seven students from Knight High School and their Teacher/ Representative visited the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Palmdale to meet the current Rotary Club Members and introduce themselves as future members of the Knight High School Rotary Interact Club.  Teacher Joy McCall and students: Louise Candeloza, Paola Sanchez, Monica Ayala, Ivy Ta, Marcia Sanchez, Mia Carranza and Argyu Mananjun met with Rotary Club Members:  Sharon Freeman, David Maddock, Tina Borzage, Chuck Church, Janice Garcia, Yolanda Risch, Larry Flores and Sam Garcia to get acquainted begin the process of establishing an Interact Club at Knight High School. 

 

Guests Barbara Frazier, Luanne Arredondo and Holly Liebenow were also in attendance at the meeting.  Barbara is the Teacher/Representative at Lancaster High School for the Interact Club at that school.  She spoke to the students of her experience establishing and growing the Interact Club at Lancaster High.  Barbara has been especially helpful to Palmdale Rotary in providing youth support to Palmdale Rotary events.  Luanne Arredondo spoke to the guests about the support on-line that Rotary provides to both new and existing Interact Clubs.  Holly Liebenow was a guest of Sharon Freeman.  It was a great introductory kick-off to the establishment of the Knight High School Interact Club.

Palmdale Rotary Holds Demotion Party

 

On Saturday, June 24, 2017 the Rotary Club of Palmdale held their annual Demotion Party for outgoing President Chuck Church at the home of Sharon Freeman.  The event marked the end of Chuck’s year as President and the recognition of Sam Garcia as Incoming President for 2017-2018.

 

Great food and drinks were in abundance at the party.  After lunch Chuck was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the Members of the Rotary Club of Palmdale by Incoming President, Sam Garcia.  Sam spoke to the Club Members and Guests about his vision for the Club for 2017-2018.  Outgoing President Chuck Church then spoke and thanked everyone for attending and thanked the Club Members for their support during the year.  Chuck then presented Club Members Sharon Freeman, David Maddock, Tina Borzage, Janice Garcia and Sam Garcia with Certificates of Appreciation and gifts for their efforts in 2016-2017.  Sharon’s Certificate was for Membership and Youth Service Chair, David’s Certificate was for Community Service Chair and Sergeant-at-Arms, Tina’s Certificate was for Club Treasurer, Janice’s Certificate was for Club Secretary and Sam’s Certificate was for Foundation Chair and President Elect.  Chuck was also presented with a Certificate of Recognition from 5^th District Supervisor Kathryn Barger.  Senior Field Representative Donna Termeer presented the Certificate to Chuck on behalf of Supervisor Barger. 

 

Following the speeches and presentations everyone had dessert and sang “Songs we all know” with Olaf Landsgard leading the way on guitar.  It was a great time and everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

After several attempts to get together with Walmart Manager Veronica Jordan, Palmdale Rotary President Chuck Church was able to slow her down long enough to present her with a plaque from the Rotary Club of Palmdale thanking her and her team for their support of our Children’s Shopping Spree in December of 2016.

Marcie “The Bubble Girl” Entertains Special Needs 

Students at Ocotillo Elementary School

 

The Rotary Club of Palmdale sponsored the first of two assemblies for Special Needs Children in the Antelope Valley.  Today’s assembly was held for the children of the Palmdale Discovery Center at Ocotillo Elementary School.  Chuck Church, Janice Garcia and Sharon Freeman attended the event and were escorted to the Assembly room by school principal Colleen Sawyer.  Over 100 kids were entertained by Marcie the Bubble Girl.  She drew Oh’s and Awe’s from the crowd as she started her routine.  Marcie started with small bubble tricks and displays and gradually escalated to bubbles measuring three feet in diameter. 

Kids from the audience were asked to help out on stage as the program progressed. Marcie’s final display was to fully engulf the kids in a balloon.  The kids loved the performance and they got a bubble crown before returning to their classrooms.  For the children, this was a stress free fun time in which the children were able to interact with the Marcie on stage. 

The next performance will be at the Manzanita Elementary School in the Fall to kick off the new school year in August or September.

Tina Borzage Participates in Superbuild 2017

 

For the second year in a row Tina Borzage of the Rotary Club of Palmdale participated in the home building project in Tacate, Mexico.  This year’s project was designated Superbuild 2017 and took place on May 6, 2017.  The project consists of volunteer Rotarians assembling houses on pre-poured slabs.  Tina, being a veteran of the 2016 build was put in charge of the painting detail and did an excellent job.  Walls were erected, roofs completed and windows and doors were installed in one day.  For the new owners, this was probably their first home that they could lock and secure.

Palmdale Rotary Conducts Spring Blowout Sale III

 

The Rotary Club of Palmdale held their 3rd Spring Blowout Sale fundraiser at the Four Points Swap Meet on Sunday, April 9^th.  Everything imaginable was available at the rummage sale that day from stereo equipment to knick-knacks to used clothing.  The swap meet draws a large Sunday crowd every weekend and this was no exception.  After a slow start, lookers became buyers and the Club was busy with sales until late afternoon.  The results exceeded expectations and the Club looks forward to next year's sale.

The Rotary Club of Palmdale hosted Donna Termeer as their guest speaker at their weekly meeting on January 25, 2017.  Ms Termeer is the Senior Field Director for recently elected Kathryn Barger (Supervisor for the 5th District in Los Angeles County).   Donna spoke to the Club about her new assignment and what lies ahead for the Antelope Valley.  Although very well known in the AV, Donna is still meeting with all the agencies in the AV to coordinate their goals and concerns to report back to Supervisor Barger.  Donna indicated that with Supervisor Barger being the only conservative on the Board of Supervisors, it may be difficult to achieve large break throughs immediately.  Being in a 4-1 minority, the victories will be small and selective in the beginning.  The Club presented their views on several subjects pertaining to the AV.  The Club asked Donna to watch for areas in which Palmdale Rotary could help the community.  The Club's focus has mostly been on youth oriented projects, but we are open to ideas where we can help out the community.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS DISTRICT GOVERNOR

 

The Rotary Club of Palmdale hosted District 5300 Governor Luciano de Sylva, his wife Hazel and Assistant Governor Charlene Melchers at their December 7, 2016 meeting at Gino’s Italian Restaurant.  Others in attendance for the preliminary meeting were Sharon Freeman, Tina Borzage, Janice and Sam Garcia and David Maddock.  Governor Luciano “Lu” de Sylva asked about the Club in general as well as the Club’s membership and activities.  President Chuck Church briefed the Governor on the Club’s budget, membership and goals as established in Club Runner and DACdb.  The Governor was given a printed package containing details on the information provided by the President.  Governor de Sylva expressed his concerns and goals for his year as District Governor and asked if there was anything he could do to help our Club.  Longtime Member David Maddock asked the Governor what the District could do to help support small clubs.  Governor Lu said that he would take David’s question under consideration and do what he could to help.

 

At the conclusion of the Governor/Officers meeting, the remaining Club Members and Guests arrived for dinner.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal.  At the conclusion of dinner, Governor Lu de Sylva thanked the Club for all they do for their community, the District and Rotary International.  The Club thanked the Governor and his wife Hazel for attending and presented them with a gift package of wine and glasses.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS CHILDREN'S SHOPPING SPREE

 

 

The Rotary Club of Palmdale under the leadership of Committee Chairman David Maddock conducted its 22nd Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the WalMart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 3, 2016.  Veronica Jordan and her Walmart Team provided the venue for twenty under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from the Eastside of Palmdale and were selected by Teachers from the school district.  Each child was treated to an early morning breakfast at McDonalds and then escorted by a club member or volunteer throughout the store to shop for family members.  At the completion of shopping the packages were all wrapped with festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given and gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice.  As in the past, the Rotary Club established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again with resounding success.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS VALERIE LENSING

(SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR)

 

Valerie Lensing addressed the Rotary Club of Palmdale at their weekly meeting on November 30, 2016.  Valerie is a Special Education Instructor and Therapist for Autistic Children.  Valerie briefed the Club on her work with special needs children at Manzanita School and the Palmdale Learning Center.  A few years ago the Palmdale Rotary Club sponsored a petting zoo for the children that Valerie coordinated.  Because of their special circumstances, it is easier to bring a field trip to the children than to charter a bus or van and take them on a traveling field trip.  With that thought in mind, Valerie’s current focus for the children is to bring them an entirely new field trip event.  The kids are very interested in bubbles and are fascinated by the way they float and drift with the wind.  With that thought in mind, Valerie is entertaining the idea of bringing a Master Bubble Blower to the two school campuses to entertain the children.  Valerie has arranged for two events in the Spring of 2017 and is asking the Club if they could fund some of the cost.  The cost for doing two events at two schools is approximately $800.  The Club has taken it into consideration for funding at least one of the events. 

 

At the conclusion of her presentation, Valerie was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Club for her briefing as guest speaker.

AARON TURK BRIEFS pALMDALE ROTARY ON EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

on the Successful Completion of his Eagle Scout Project

 

 

Eagle Scout candidate Aaron Turk briefed the Palmdale Rotary Club on the successful completion of his Eagle Scout project at their weekly meeting on November 9, 2016.  Aaron's project was to paint and trim the offices at the Grace Resources Center in Lancaster.  Aaron was responsible for obtaining the equipment and supplies to do the painting, scheduling the date for the project, coordinating activities among the staff at the Center and his supporting scouts and of course participating in painting the office.  The project went smoothly and was successfully completed.

 

The Palmdale Rotary Club asked Aaron to speak to his scout troop and remind them to come to us for help when planning their Eagle Scout projects.  Aaron is only a few merit badges away from obtaining his Eagle Scout Award.  We asked him to notify us when he completes his tasks and is scheduled for Court of Honor to receive his Eagle Scout Award.  Job well done Aaron!

At its regular Wednesday evening meeting, Palmdale Rotary met with Pauline East from the Los Angeles County Animal Shelter Foundation to find new ways to support activities in the Antelope Valley.  In her presentation, Pauline described the work her foundation does to support the newly constructed animal shelter in Palmdale, California and the other five shelters in Los Angeles County.  The primary concern in working with the County is to help find homes for the animals and work to get lost pets back to their owners.

 

Although the shelter does an excellent job with the budget it is provided by the County, the number of incoming animals far out weighs the outgoing adoptions, resulting in a budgetary shortfall.  The Foundation is focusing on education, training and information directed specifically at children regarding spay and neutering as the downstream means to reduce the influx of new animals coming into the shelter.

 

Palmdale Rotary will continue to remain in close contact with Pauline and the Foundation in hopes of creating a joint project that we can work on together in the near future.  Our thanks to Pauline for her informative presentation.

At their April 20^th regular Wednesday meeting, the Rotary Club of Palmdale honored John Martinez as their newest Paul Harris Fellow.  John’s recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow brings the club’s total to nine.  All beginning 2015-2016 club members are now Paul Harris Fellows.  In the photos below, President Sharon Freeman presents John with his pin and recognition certificate.  The club’s three new are looking forward to becoming Paul Harris Fellows in the near future.

PALMDALE ROTARY CONDUCTS SPRING BLOWOUT SALE

The Rotary Club of Palmdale held their 2^nd Spring Blowout Sale fundraiser at the Four Points Swap Meet on Sunday, April 17^th.  Everything imaginable was available at the rummage sale that day from stereo equipment to knick-knacks to used clothing.  The swap meet draws a large Sunday crowd every weekend and this was no exception.  Funds raised from the event will be used to support the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Palmdale

installed three new members at their weekly meeting on February 17, 2016.  The new members were Lori Chambers, Brandon Youngblood and Lori Troise.  Club President Sharon Freeman conducted the ceremony and welcomed the new members to the club and presented them with their "Welcome to Rotary" packets and membership pins.  District Governor Randy Pote was in attendance as well and assisted Sharon with the ceremony by presenting the new members with District 5300 pins.  The new members are a welcome addition to the Palmdale Club and we look forward to an exciting future with them on board.

PALMDALE ROTARY HELPS TO BUILD MUSIC PROGRAM AT ANTELOPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  In a project that began last summer, the Rotary Club of Palmdale added a new chapter on March 13, 2016 with the delivery of an upright piano to the Antelope Elementary School in Littlerock.  During the summer, Palmdale Rotary took on the project of creating a music program at the elementary school.  The Club conducted a special raffle at their Oktoberfest event at Lane Ranch and raised  $1,000 which went to the purchase of musical instruments from Dana Grossi Music and Guitar Center.

 

The instruments were purchased and delivered to the school in January 2016.  A special ceremony took place on January 21, 2016 at the School District's Board Meeting to thank Palmdale Rotary.  Club President Sharon Freeman accepted a plaque presented by the School Board and the entire Club received hand made thank you cards from the students.  In addition, Palmdale Rotary presented a check to the school to help fund a music instructor for the first quarter of the year.   

 

On March 13, 2016 the Club was able to deliver a piano which had been donated to the program.  The Club is actively working on plans for future contributions to the music program.

Rotary Christmas Shopping Spree 2014

On February 25, 2015 the Rotary Club of Palmdale recognized Norm Hickling (District Representative for 5^th District Supervisor Michael Antonovich) for his long time support to our Rotary Club.  Mr. Hickling has been a strong supporter of the Club for many years and specifically to its annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree held each year in early December.  Club President Tina Borzage honored Mr. Hickling with a plaque of appreciation.  We are extremely fortunate and grateful to be able to include Norm as one of our Friends of Rotary.

On December 6, 2014 our club conducted its 17th Annual Children's Christmas Shopping Spree held at Wal-Mart Superstore on 10th Street West in Palmdale.  Ariko Jackson, Manager, was instrumental in helping us to orchestrate a successful event. On March 17th Club President Tina Borzage honored Mr. Jackson with a plaque of appreciation.  We are so grateful to be able to include Ariko as one of our Friends of Rotary.

RYLA PARTICIPANT SHARES HER ADVENTURE

 

 

We were so fortunate to meet with one of the students that we sponsored to attend this years RYLA -Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp.  Her name is Jamie Calhousa a student at Palmdale High School. She shared with us her experiences at the weekend event that took place at Thousand Pines Camp in Crestline, CA.on April 17th -19th.  The excitement she gained from her experience at RYLA was infectious. All of our members were impressed with her maturity and goodness and we can tell that she is growing up to be a very special person.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive, two-and-a-half-day leadership training program for high school juniors in District 5300 chosen for their leadership potential. In addition to the development of leadership skills, RYLA is meant to develop understanding of Rotary among youth participants and reinforce and provide recognition for their efforts, accomplishments, skills and potential as leaders. Rotarians serve as facilitators to the students’ learning and discovery, as well as role models of Rotary ideals of the Four Way Test and Service Above Self.

We look forward to hearing from Jamie again and hope that her desire for "service above self" continues to grow.
